Welcome to my homepage.

I’m a speaker, author, adviser, and researcher. I advocate for high quality public education, a strong teaching profession and positive educational change across the world.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all in-person presentations have been cancelled until April 2021 at the earliest. A range of virtual events are being offered. You can find out more here.

I am honoured to Direct the CHENINE Collaboratory on Change, Engagement and innovation at the University of Ottawa (link), to hold a Research Professorship at Boston College, a Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Hong Kong University, a Visiting Professorships at the University of Stavanger, and an Honorary Professorship at Swansea University.

My writing and speaking is based on first-hand research and advisory work around the globe. My 2018 book on Collaborative Professionalism with Michael O’Connor is based on a WISE Foundation project that supported our research in 5 countries. Three books are projected for completion in 2020. My memoir, Moving: a memoir of education and social mobility, with a Foreword by Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, is published by Solution Tree. My upcoming book with Dennis Shirley, Student Engagement: beyond relevance, technology and fun, will be published by Solution Tree in early 2021.

This site will connect you to some of my op eds, videos, and the organizations and journals I lead. I am currently Past President of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement. I am co-founder & President of the ARC education project: a group of nations committed to broadly defined excellence, equity, wellbeing, inclusion, democracy and human rights in education. I have been privileged to serve as an Adviser in Education to the Premier of Ontario and the First Minister of Scotland.

On this website, you’ll have chance to learn about and engage with my research and ideas on professional capital, collaborative professionalism, leading from the middle, education and social class, educational change, and uplifting and sustainable leadership – all in support of stronger educational systems that value broadly defined excellence, inclusion, and equity for all students.
