Welcome to my homepage.
I’m a speaker, author, adviser, and researcher. I advocate for high quality public education, a strong teaching profession and positive educational change across the world.
In-person presentations will resume in late 2021. A range of virtual events is occurring in the meantime. You can find out more here.
I am Director of the CHENINE Collaboratory on Change, Engagement and Innovation at the University of Ottawa. I hold a Research Professorship at Boston College, a Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Hong Kong University, and an Honorary Professorship at Swansea University.
My writing and speaking are based on first-hand research and advisory work around the globe. My most recent book is Five Paths of Student Engagement with Dennis Shirley (June 2021). My memoir, Moving: a memoir of education and social mobility, with a Foreword by Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, is also published by Solution Tree, 2020. Collaborative Professionalism with Michael O'Connor is published by Corwin, 2018. Well-being in Schools, with Dennis Shirley, will be published by ASCD in December, 2021.
This site will connect you to some of my op eds, videos, and the organizations and intellectual projects I lead. I am Past President of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement, 2018-2020. I am also co-founder & President of the ARC education project: a group of nations committed to broadly defined excellence, equity, well-being, inclusion, democracy and human rights in education. I have been privileged to serve as an Adviser in Education to the Premier of Ontario and now to the First Minister of Scotland.
On this website, you’ll have chance to learn about and engage with my research and ideas on professional capital, collaborative professionalism, leading from the middle, education and equity, student engagement and well-being, and educational change—all in support of stronger educational systems that value broadly defined excellence, inclusion, and equity for all students.
